India: ‘Health Without Harm’: Reducing Risk from Healthcare Waste Management in India

The Global Healthcare Waste Management project, implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India and funded by the Global Environment Facility, is helping promote best practices in healthcare waste management and mercury waste management in the King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, India. The hospital has been able to reduce the amount of infectious waste generated by 80 percent due to proper segregation, transportation and treatment of waste practices.

King George Medical University's bio-medical waste management system has received 'Special Recognition Award' from United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) and World Health Organisation (WHO), for developing model bio-medical waste management practices.
UNDP GEF Project to be presented at a side event during the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland
The event, Healthier hospitals for healthier people: Greening the health sector, managing waste and mercury, will be held on Friday, 25 May 2012 from 12:45-14:15 at the Palais des Nations, Salle IV (Room 4). The side event will focus on greening the health sector, the progress in negotiations on the Mercury Treaty and the elimination of mercury-containing medical devices, as well as international initiatives on healthcare waste management.
