Cebu City (11 February) -- To promote public health and welfare for the environment, the Department of Health in region 7 (DOH-7) in coordination with the DENR-7-Environment Management Bureau will conduct a training on Health Care Waste Management to the public and private hospitals.

The first batch of training will be on March 23 to 25 at the DOH-7 Compound for 15 public hospitals.

Techniques and proper procedures on how to handle safety disposal and various treatments on the different health care wastes will be part of the topics for discussion during the activity.

According to Engr. Evangeline Cañoneo, DOH-7 Environmental Health Program Coordinator, the DOH and the DENR will conduct the monitoring of hospitals whether they comply with the policy on waste management.

It is the DENR that penalizes non-compliant hospitals and other health facilities, she added.

Canoneo also said that each hospital must apply as waste generator to the DENR so they can be guided and closely monitored in their waste management.

After the training, the participants from each hospital will be asked to submit their plan of action on health care waste management. (PIA-7/HFG)
